SUMMARY:Total Solar Eclipse of August 12\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:This astronomical event is the second and final eclipse of 2026.  It is also the first of three upcoming eclipses that are visible from parts of Spain.  The path of totality makes landfall in eastern Greenland\, continues into western Iceland\, and into the Pacific Ocean\, before crossing northern Spain\, and ending in the Mediterranean Sea off the east coast of Spain and northern Africa.  For observers in Spain\, the total eclipse phase occurs when the sun is low in the sky\, and eclipse followers will want to ensure they have an unrestricted view of the horizon.  The duration of totality is relatively short\, varying from a little over 2 minutes in Greenland to about 1 minute 45 seconds in most of Spain.

SUMMARY:March 3\, 2026 Total Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:This event is the first of two lunar eclipses in 2026.  The eclipse viewing area is centered over the Pacific Ocean and will be visible in most parts of North America\, Asia\, Australia\, and New Zealand.  From South America\, only observers in the northwestern portion can view any of the total phase of the eclipse.  Observers in other parts of South America will see the sun set before totality begins.  This eclipse will be completely invisible in Africa and Western Europe. \n

SUMMARY:February 17\, 2026 Annular Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two solar eclipse events for 2026.  The path of annularity\, from which the eclipse can be seen as a ring of fire\, passes over Antarctica and the Pacific Ocean.  There are no islands of any significant size in the path of annularity. Observers in the southernmost parts of South America will see a very small partial eclipse with a few percent coverage of the sun\, while those in the southern portions of Africa can view a more significant\, partial eclipse with up to about 50 percent coverage of the sun.

SUMMARY:October 2\, 2024 Annular Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:The October 2nd Annular Eclipse is the final eclipse event of 2024.  The path of annularity of this eclipse lies predominantly over the Pacific Ocean.  The annularity or “ring of fire” stage will be visible from the Hawaiian Islands\, and the southern portions of Chile and Argentina.   Additionally\, large portions of the southern half of South America and Antarctica can see at least a partial eclipse. \nViewers who make it to the path of angularity on the right date and at the right time will see about 91% of the sun obscured.   Accordingly\, the sky will not darken significantly\, and the stars and planets near the sun will not become visible as they do during a total eclipse.   Viewers near the center line of the path of annularity will experience about 7 minutes during which the moon’s disk will be entirely within the sun’s photosphere.  Before\, after\, and during the eclipse\, at least some portions of the photosphere will remain visible.  Therefore\, viewers must employ eye protection or use indirect methods of viewing the eclipse.

SUMMARY:September 17-18\, 2024 Partial Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:The September Partial Lunar eclipse is the third of four eclipse events in 2024 and is the start of the second and final eclipse season for the year.  The solar eclipse two weeks later on October 2\, 2024\, is the other eclipse of the season.  The September partial eclipse will have a maximum magnitude of 8.5%\, as only a small portion of the moon will pass through the earth’s umbral shadow. \nThe eclipse will be visible over the entire continental United States\, South America\, Europe\, Africa\, and a good portion of Asia.

SUMMARY:Great North American Eclipse April 8 2024.
DESCRIPTION:This is the next great opportunity for eclipse watchers to see a total solar eclipse in North America.  The next opportunity will not occur until 2045.   This path of totality starts in the South Pacific Ocean and makes landfall in Mexico near Mazatlan.  The path of totality traverses North America on a northeasterly path\, traversing the United States and passing through Texas\, Arkansas\, Missouri\, Kentucky\, Indiana\, Illinois\, Ohio\, New York\, Vermont\, and Maine. \nAt points near the center of the path of totality\, the duration of totality will be more than 4 minutes which is nearly twice as long as the duration of totality for the August 21\, 2017 eclipse.   Carbondale\, Illinois will have the distinction of being in the path of totality for both the 2017 and 2024 Eclipse.

SUMMARY:October 28\, 2023 Umbral Eclipse of October
DESCRIPTION:The October 28 umbral eclipse is the final eclipse event of the year.  During this eclipse\, a relatively small portion of the moon\, about 12 percent\, will pass through the darkest (umbral) shadow of the earth.   Small portions of the penumbral phase of this eclipse are visible in the eastern portions of the United States and South America.   However\, in these locations\, the event will occur relatively low on the horizon\, and in any event\, the penumbral phase is difficult to detect even with a telescope.  The umbral phase will be visible in most of Africa\, Europe\, Asia\, Russia\, China\, and the South Pacific including Australia\, Indonesia\, and New Guinea.

SUMMARY:Annular Solar Eclipse of October 14\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:This eclipse is the second and final solar eclipse of 2023.  It is the second of a series of three eclipses (August 17\, 2021\, October 14\, 2023\, and April 8\, 2024) that are collectively called the Great American Eclipses.   This eclipse will be an annular eclipse\, which means that in the path of the maximum eclipse\, a ring of the sun will be visible around the dark black disk of the moon. \nThis eclipse is visible over North and South America.  The path of annularity passes through the western United States\, Central America\, and northern South America including parts of Colombia and Brazil. \n

SUMMARY:May 5\, 2023 Penumbral Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two eclipses that will occur in 2023.  This eclipse is a penumbral eclipse during which the moon passes through the relatively faint outer earth’s shadow.  During a penumbral eclipse\, there is only a faint darkening of the moon making the event very difficult to observe.   At maximum eclipse\, the moon is nearly fully immersed in earth’s penumbra and it may be just possible to detect the eclipse once about 60 percent of the moon is in shadow.  The eclipse will last about four hours. \nThis eclipse is visible over most of Africa\, Europe\, Russia\, and the South Pacific including Australia and Indonesia.

SUMMARY:Occultation of Uranus by Moon
DESCRIPTION:The moon passes in front of Uranus about once per month this year.   For those of us who are not located in the right place to see the occultation\, we can view the planet near the moon.   Uranus is barely visible to the naked eye and will be difficult to see in the vicinity of a very bright moon.  However\, you may be able to see the planet through binoculars a few hours before or after the occultation.   For astronomers looking to view Uranus for the first time\, the moon will make a very good pointer to the planet. \nOccultation hunters in the South Pacific\, including parts of Australia and New Zealand\, will be able to witness this month’s event.  Other viewers will see the moon pass near Uranus without obscuring the planet.
